Emails not working with Total VPN

For a small set of users they may experience issues trying to use Email when connected to our VPN. We’re not alone, most VPN providers block port 25.

Whilst we acknowledge it can be frustrating to our customers, it would cause widespread disruption to our service and even cause blacklisting of our servers.

You can still send and receive emails whilst connected to Total VPN and it’s extremely simple.

Most, if not all email applications will allow you to use a different port. You can change your SMTP server settings to use port 465 or 587 and you’ll be able to send and receive emails again. It’ll only take a few minutes max.

This how-to assumes you're using POP/SMTP for email. It does not apply if you're using Microsoft Exchange for email.
  • Within Outlook, click Tools > Account Settings

  • Select your Email account from the list, then click Change

  • Click More Settings

  • Check the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication box

  • Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected

  • Click the Advanced tab

  • Change the Outgoing Server field number from 25 to 465 or 587

  • Click OK

  • Click Next until you reach the Finish button

  • Within Outlook Express, click Tools > Accounts

  • Click the Mail tab

  • Select your email account from the list, then click the Properties button

  • Make sure the Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing box is checked

  • Click the Servers tab, locate the Settings button below Outgoing Mail Server and click it

  • Locate the SMTP Port field (it should say 25). Change the 25 to either 465 or 587

  • Make sure the My SMTP server requires authentication box is checked

  • Click OK, then click OK again until all dialogue Windows are closed

  • Restart Outlook Express

  • Within Thunderbird, click Tools > Account Settings

  • Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left pane of the Account Settings window

  • Change the number in the Port field to 465 or 587

  • Click OK

  • Click OK again to close the Account settings window

  • Within Mail, click Preferences in the Mail menu

  • Click the Accounts tab to locate your account and open it

  • Open the Outgoing Mail Server window

  • Change the number in the Port field to 465 or 587

  • Set the Encryption Method to TLS

  • Check the Use Authentication box

  • Click Continue

  • Click Continue again then close any remaining windows

  • Tap the Settings icon

  • Tap Mail > Contacts >Calendars

  • On accounts, choose the account you wish to change the port for

  • Tap Account

  • Tap SMTP under Outgoing mail server

  • Tap your Primary server

  • On the bottom, tap Server port

  • Change the port from 25 to 465 or 587

  • Tap Done
